Strong winds in the Alston and Kirkby Stephen area are causing lying snow to blow onto the road network and several roads are now closed or impassable.
In the Alston Area.
A686 Hartside Closed: drifting snow
B6277 Middleton Road Closed: Drifting snow
A689 Nenthead to Killhope Closed: Drifting snow
A689 Alston to Brampton Open: Passable with care
A686 Alston to Hexham Closed: Drifting snow
Many other roads in the area are impasable due to the drifting snow.
In the Kirkby Stephen Area.
Priority 1 & 2 roads all generally open and passable with care. But the B6276 Middleton to Brough road is closed due to drifting snow.
Drifting snow is making many roads impassable or only passable with great care.
Along the East Fellside from Appleby north to Melmerby resources are working to keep routes clear.
The remainder of the Penrith area shows a covering of snow with some drifting on higher ground but roads generally passable with care.
Temperatures have risen and many lower roads are now free of snow but freezing conditions are expected again to make conditions treacherous overnight and into the morning.
Highways staff have been working around the clock to salt roads and clear snow to keep routes open where possible. However, this is not always possible in extreme conditions.
All priority one, two and three roads have cleared and salted in last two days.
Please avoid these routes and avoid uneccesary travel in this area.
