The Harraby reception centre at the North Cumbria Technology College will close this morning after helping thousands of people through the last few traumatic days.
The centre has been providing hot food and drinks and overnight accommodation since the morning of Saturday, 8th January.
Around 300 people have needed overnight accommodation there and the centre has served thousands of hot meals to many hundreds of householders affected by the flooding.
Hot food and drinks will continue to be available at Norman Street School on Norman Street, Carlisle, between 7am and 7pm. Most of the people using the centre are local householders who are starting to tackle the aftermath of flooding in their homes.
Councillor Tim Stoddard, leader of Cumbria County Council, said: "I visited the Harraby reception centre on Monday night and was hugely impressed by the support given by everybody working there. The people using the centre were well looked after and in remarkably good spirits given what they have been through - it was a humbling experience.
"The staff there have done a fantastic job, worked extremely long hours and most have done it on a purely voluntary basis - we owe them a great deal of thanks."
"Teachers and other staff at Norman Street School are also doing a fantastic job and will continue to offer comfort hot food and drinks to those who need it."
"It has been a tremendous team effort between the emergency services, voluntary organisations such as WRVS, Red Cross and St John's Ambulance, as well as the two local councils."
I am particularly impressed by the way all the people have just got on with it and mucked in to help everybody else with whatever needed doing.
