Hazardous driving conditions are expected throughout Cumbria over the next 24 hours, as the weather turns wintry later today with ice, sleet and snow showers forecast. Snow is likely to settle, particularly on higher ground. In addition strong south westerly winds will make conditions even more difficult.
The county council highways service will be gritting from late afternoon into the evening and winter maintenance operations will be in force throughout the night. However the recent flooding has meant surface water still exists and with temperatures expected to drop below freezing, standing water may freeze leading to treacherous road conditions.
Road users must also be aware that storm debris may be on the roads and that they should slow down and take care.
Pedestrians should also take care as conditions underfoot could be testing.
