18/1/2005 - Sunday opening comes to Kendal Library

Kendal Library will celebrate the start of its new Sunday opening arrangements this weekend.

The new noon to 4pm opening times begin on Sunday, 23rd January.

The extra weekend service will make family visits easier and Sunday opening will be different, with special activities, performances and taster sessions on the library’s computers.

Kendal joins Cumbria County Council's Library Service's other main libraries at Barrow, Carlisle, Penrith, Whitehaven and Workington in opening on Sundays as a way of allowing more people than ever to use the services.

Roger Bingham, county council cabinet spokesman for culture, said: "The county council's library service got a "good" rating from the Government inspectors and this is another example of just how well the libraries are serving their communities and trying to reach more people."

Library Services Manager Alan Welton said: "We had a good public response to a pilot scheme of Sunday opening in Penrith and by opening all six main libraries across the county on Sundays we hope to give more people access to the services."
