19/1/2005 - Appleby in Westmorland town centre enhancement scheme gets go-ahead

A new £500k project aimed at enhancing Appleby in Westmorland town centre has got the go-ahead at today's meeting for Cumbria County Council's Eden local committee.

The scheme was finalised after extensive consultation with the local community over recent weeks. The scheme aims to support the economic regeneration of the town centre , introduces environmental enhancement, provides safer space for pedestrians and improves accessibility and includes:

Retaining parking between the Tufton Hotel and Boroughgate

Creating a footway/pedestrian area between the Low Cross & Bull Ring

Retain vehicle access in front of the Moor Hall between the Tufton Hotel and Boroughgate

Widen the footway along the Moot Hall on Boroughgate

Keep the existing footway and carriageway width on Bridge Street

Pave the footpaths with Lazonby sandstone and have granite kerbs

Councillor Gary Strong, chair of the local committee said:

"I am pleased that the local committee has agreed to provide funding for this worthwhile project which has the potential to help the town continue to thrive. An exhibition along with an extensive consultation exercise was carried out with local people and traders to come up with a scheme to improve the town. The scheme will make the town more attractive and help the local economy. Businesses as well as pedestrians will benefit from the environmental enhancements, making the whole area more attractive."

The scheme will be funded by the local committee's transport capital programme with a contribution from Eden District Council. Work will start by the Autumn this year.
