26/1/2005 - Extra efforts made during resurfacing in Ambleside

Major resurfacing work due to start in Ambleside on Monday will be carried out in the evenings to minimise disruption to households and businesses.

Cumbria County Council highways engineers will work between 6pm and midnight on weekdays during the three week project to resurface key parts of Ambleside’s road system.

The work will be done in four phases:

Phase 1.

Resurface Lake Road from Compston Road to Market Place from Monday, 31st January.

The road will be closed from 6pm to midnight but open during the day until 11th February. There will be a two-way diversion along Compston Road.

Residents of Stockghyll are advised to use Cheapside to get to and from their homes.

Phase 2.

Resurface Lake Road from Market Place to its junction with Church Street.

Road will be open during the day, but closed from 6pm to midnight between 2nd and 4th February.

There will be a two-way diversion along Compston Road.

Residents of Stockghyll are advised to use Cheapside by Barclay's Bank.

Phase 3.

Resurface Lake Road from Church Street to Kelsick Road.

The road will be closed between 8am and 9pm from Monday, 7th February, to Friday 11th.

A diversion will operate along Church Street.

Access to properties for residential and commercial properties will be difficult.

Phase 4.

Resurface Lake Road from Kelsick Road to Wansfell Road.

Daytime working with lanes closures.

Works will be in place from Monday, 14th February, to Friday ,18th February, when traffic will be restricted to one lane. Little disruption is expected.

The time of year has been chosen so as not to effect the town’s tourist trade and the hours of the day when work is to be done have been chosen to cause as little disruption as possible to the people of Ambleside. Evening working will stop no later than midnight to spare residents from late night noise.

Councillor Kevan Wilkinson, county council spokesman for highways and transport, said: "This major resurfacing work is important and necessary. Unfortunately it cannot be done without some disruption. We have done our best to keep that to a minimum and Cumbria County Council appeals to the residents and businesses of Ambleside for patience while the work in going on."
