31/1/2005 - Additional computer facilities for Carlisle students affected by the floods

Cumbria County Council and St Aidans School in Carlisle have joined forces to make sure that students who have lost their computer facilities at home during the floods have additional access to these facilities at the end of the school day.

Years 11, 12 and 13 students from any school will be able to attend St Aidans on Tuesdays and Wednesdays from 1st February until the half term holidays from 4pm - 6pm or 6pm - 8pm. All places must be booked in advance. Students will need to bring floppy discs to save their work and passwords will be given for certain research packages.

County councillor Joan Stocker, cabinet member for education said:

"Many young people who are at an important stage in their studies have been seriously affected by the floods. Students have lost course work, some have either had their computer at home damaged and some who are in temporary accommodation are finding it difficult accessing alternative computer facilities. These two hour sessions will run from the beginning of February until half term for any years 11 - 13 students from any school in the City. It will then be reviewed to see if there is a demand to keep them going for longer. I hope that students take up this opportunity."

Anyone wanting to attend must book their place in advance by calling Cumbria County Council's education service on 01228 601191, 01228 606814, 01228 606813 or 01228 606089. Places must be booked by 2.30pm on their chosen day. Students should report to the front entrance of the school where they will be directed to the ICT area. For further information parents and students can call Geraint Howell at Cumbria County Council's education service on 01228 601223 or Lois Baird at St Aidans on 01228 607587.
