4/1/2005 - Sunday opening for Whitehaven Library

Whitehaven Library will celebrate the start of its new Sunday opening arrangements this weekend.

The library will open its doors at midday on Sunday, 9th January, to mark the start of the new 12pm to 4pm Sunday opening hours.

The extra weekend service will make family visits easier and Sunday opening will be different, with special activities, performances and tasters sessions on the library’s computers coming up.

Whitehaven joins Cumbria County Council's Library Service's five other main libraries at Barrow, Carlisle, Kendal, Penrith and Workington in opening on Sundays as a way of allowing more people than ever to use the services.

Roger Bingham, county council cabinet member for culture, said: "The county council's library service got a "good" rating from the Government inspectors this year, and this is another good example of just how well the libraries are serving their communities and trying to reach more people."

Library services manager Alan Welton said: "We had a good public response to a pilot scheme of Sunday opening in Penrith two years ago and we hope to see more people using library services on Sundays across the county."
