6/7/2005 - County council appoints new Director of Children's Services

Cumbria County Council has appointed Moria Swann as the new Corporate Director for Children's Services. The appointment was made following a two-day selection process held this week.

Moira Swann started her career in the teaching profession, has worked in Youth Justice and was previously Head of Children's Services for Gloucestershire County Council. She is currently Deputy Director in Hertfordshire County Council's Children's, Schools and Family Department which is one of the earliest authorities to develop Children's Services.

Tim Stoddard, leader of the council and chair of the panel of county councillors who interviewed shortlisted candidates says:

"Moira will bring a wealth of experience to Cumbria from many fields of work with children and is a valuable addition to our senior management team. I am certainly looking forward to her taking up her new post here in Cumbria and know she will build on the excellent work undertaken in Education by Victoria Ashfield and in Social Services by Stephen Wilds."

The 2 day selection process involved stakeholder panels including major partners involved in children's services and uniquely involved a panel of young people who had the opportunity to interview the candidates and put forward their views to councillors.

The final decision was made by an all-party Chief Officers Panel of county councillors.
