14/6/2005 - Investigating Warwick Bridge to Wetheral Road

Engineers working for Cumbria County Council are about to start work exploring a long-term solution to the dramatic slippage on the B6263 Warwick Bridge to Wetheral Road.

The road beside the River Eden has suffered for decades from slippage, but the floods in January resulted in a large dramatic slip which resulted in the road becoming unsafe for all vehicles due to the risk of a large sudden slip.

English Nature (EN) and the Environment Agency (EA) have insisted that exploratory borehole drilling necessary for the investigation of a long-term solution to the problem can, for conservation reasons, only be carried out between June and September. The road runs alongside the Eden for almost half a mile and the area between road and river is designated as a Site of Special Scientific Interest.

Depending on the results of the geo-technical investigations starting on Thursday, 16th June, Cumbria County Council will aim to design, cost and reinstate the road before the end of September this year. If this proves impossible, work will have to wait until the June to September window of opportunity set by the EA and EN next year.
