Cumbria Sport is delighted to announce this year's Cumbria Youth Games final will, for the first time, be held in Barrow. In recognition of the excellent sponsorship package agreed between Cumbria Sport and the Cumberland Building Society this year's games will be known as 'Cumberland Building Society Cumbria Youth Games'.
Over 1000 young people from all six local authority areas in Cumbria will take part in this 1 day competitive festival of sport on Saturday 2nd July at six venues throughout Barrow. The event is the largest multi-sport participation event for young people in Cumbria.
The games provide 8 - 16 year old with a fantastic opportunity to compete in a high profile event. Qualifying events have been taking place all over the County during the last six months, with the successful teams securing their place at the final. The competition will include a diverse range of sports including athletics, cycling, hockey, rugby union and league, netball, football, tennis, boccia, quick cricket and for the first time - orienteering. Each local authority sports development officer has been working with schools, clubs and national governing body of sport officers to ensure that all areas of the county are represented in each of the sports.
County councillor Philip Chappelhow, cabinet spokesman for children's services said:
"This is a fabulous competition for all young people to come together and take part in a high profile competition. I am delighted that the event is in the south of the county this year. Cumbria Sport work hard to develop sporting activities available to the young people of this County and continue to achieve high standards. This is a fun way for youngsters to take part in the sport that they love. I am sure this year's final will be just as successful as they have been in the past."
Richard Johnston, sports and recreation officer for Cumbria Sport and games manager said:
"The planning and preparation for the Games is going very well, I am sure that this year’s event will be a great success. I would encourage as many people as possible to join us on the day for what will be a wonderful sporting occasion for all the family. Parents and friends of those taking part are more than welcome to come along and watch or take part in the many other events being provided on the day. I am delighted that so many local companies have agreed to get involved in the Games through the provision of sponsorship. Particular thanks must go to the Cumberland Building Society. I would like to offer all the young people taking part my best wishes for the day."
Each local authority will be trying to clinch the Lonsdale Trophy, which was awarded for the first time last year, and is currently held by Allerdale. The local authority with the most winning teams from all of the events on the day will receive the trophy, which was kindly donated by the Cumbria Playing Fields Association.
