1/6/2005 - Find out more about social work opportunities in Cumbria

Cumbria County Council is reaching out to tell people about the wide range of career opportunities available to them in the social care sector. Social Services officers will be at this year's North West Social Work event to help people find out more.

The event will be held on Thursday 9th June from 10am until 4pm at Manchester Town Hall. It has been organised by Social Care North West in association with Community Care. This event is free to attend and will highlight the hundreds of opportunities that are available.

County councillor Oliver Pearson, cabinet spokesman for adult services said:

"I am pleased that Cumbria County Council is involved in this event. This is a great opportunity for either qualified, unqualified or anyone studying or returning to social work to get together and meet with the North West local authorities and a wide range of social care organisations. There is a national shortage of social workers so making effective recruitment and retention is vital. Social care workers provide much needed help to vulnerable children and adults right across the county. Staff from Cumbria will be at the event encouraging people to come to Cumbria, outlining not only the attractions of working for an innovative employer but also in the lovely surroundings we have here in the county."

Social Services workforce development officer Donna Hynd will be attending the event. She said:

"Attracting new social workers to Cumbria is part of a much wider approach to meeting local needs for qualified staff. Attending the fair provides us with a unique opportunity to meet people in person as well as advertising our vacancies in the local and national press and on the website."
