21/6/2005 - Three quarters of a million pounds for economic growth

Economic growth in Cumbria will be boosted by £794,000 of grants from Cumbria County Council. The money will support a range of Cumbrian organisations and initiatives active in job creation, social and economic regeneration as well as boosting tourism.

The decision was taken by the council's Cabinet as County Councillor, Tim Heslop spokesman for Economic Well-Being and Regeneration explains:

"This decision recognises the council's commitment to the Cumbrian economy and our positive approach to partnership working. We must build a sustainable economic future for the county with a foundation of well-paid secure jobs.

These grants support many of the major organisations involved in that work, as well as individual initiatives. All have an important role to play and the county council will work together with them to make Cumbria the ideal place to live, visit and do business."

The grants include support to the major organisations such as West Lakes Renaissance, Furness Enterprise, Cumbria Inward Investment Agency, Maryport Harbour and Workington Regeneration, as well as support for tourism through Cumbria Tourist Board and the Whitehaven Maritime Festival.
