28/6/2005 - Gentle reminders for drivers travelling too fast

The Barrow Local Committee of Cumbria County Council gave the go-ahead this week for the installation of vehicle activated speed signs at three sites in the town.

Signs will flash up the speed limit of the road when drivers go past travelling too fast along Bridgegate Avenue and Ireleth Road.

Speed monitoring has shown that many drivers are breaking the 30mph speed limit on these roads and need to slow down. Some drivers have been recorded speeding up to 60mph at these sites.

Vehicle activated signs which flash-up motorists actual speed will also be installed on Black Butts Lane on Walney Island.

Where vehicle activated signs have been used at other locations, such as on Ocean Road, they have helped reduced traffic speeds.

Because the speed limit signs are solar-powered and do not have to be wired to the mains, they can be moved around and used in other parts of Barrow where traffic has been travelling too fast.

Alan Nicholson, chairman of Barrow Local Committee said: "The vehicle activated signs give a gentle reminder to drivers travelling too fast that they need to slow down. They are a useful alternative to more controversial ways of slowing down traffic such as speed humps, but they are designed to do the same thing and that is cut speeds and reduce the risk of accident and injuries on our roads."
