Cumbria County Council’s Barrow Local Committee yesterday approved grants worth £29,066 for work with children and young people in the area.
The committee approved the following grants recommended by its own Children and Young People’s Working Group:
£2,900 will go to support the Holiday Sports Programme at Park View School for children in the area during the summer break. A similar programme run at Easter attracted between 40 and 50 children a day in spite of bad weather and organisers expect even more youngsters to take part this summer and need more staff to manage activities.
£8,000 will be spent on Enhanced Support for early education and childcare provision for children with special educational needs.
£17,816 will go to pay for 22 hours of development worker time a week in the Early Years Development and Sustainability Team.
£350 will go towards the travel costs for a cultural trip to Samur in France for eight young people from St Aidan’s Church.
Barrow Local Committee chairman, Alan Nicholson, said: "Barrow is leading the way in youth work in Cumbria and it's schemes and activities like these that make the area’s youth service the best in the county - we are glad to support them and consider this money well spent on."
