29/6/2005 - County council sport expert involved in 2012 Olympic bid

Becky Underwood, Cumbria County Council's volunteer development officer for Cumbria Sport has been selected as one of 150 volunteer specialists to help put together the volunteer strategy for the 2012 Olympic Games.

Becky is part of the North West Sports Volunteering Programme and was the only person chosen from the North West Sports Partnerships to attend a volunteer summit earlier this month.

The summit was organised by Sport England on behalf of the London 2012 team. It was put together to consult on the draft volunteer strategy for the London 2012 Olympic bid.

Becky was delighted to find out she had been selected to be involved. She said:

"It was an excellent summit and I really hope our bid for the Games is successful. So much hard work has gone into the bid and the benefits to the whole country would be immense. Events like this just would not be possible if it wasn't for volunteers and if the decision goes our way in July I will look forward to delivering the volunteer strategy for the Games in 2012."

John Collier, Chairman of Cumbria County Council said:

"It's great to see one of the county council's officers involved in such a high profile event. Volunteers play such an important part in large events. Becky has a lot of expertise to share and I am sure her input into the strategy will be instrumental. She has already made great progress in this county finding and assisting volunteers in sport placing them in clubs throughout Cumbria. Lets hope the bid is successful and see the Olympics in London in 2012."
