29/6/2005 - Youth Games kicks off this weekend

Over 800 youngsters from across Cumbria will take part in this year's Youth Games this weekend (2nd July). The Games will, for the first time, be held in Barrow and has been organised by Cumbria Sport, sponsored by Cumberland Building Society.

The event is the largest multi-sport participation event for young people in Cumbria.  It provides 8 - 16 year olds with a fantastic opportunity to compete in a high profile event. Qualifying events have been taking place all over the County during the last six months, with the successful teams securing their place at the final.

The competition will include a diverse range of sports including athletics, cycling, hockey, rugby union, netball, football, tennis, boccia, quick cricket and for the first time - orienteering. Each local authority sports development officer has been working with schools, clubs and national governing body of sport officers to ensure that all areas of the county are represented in each of the sports.

County councillor Philip Chappelhow, cabinet spokesman for children's services said:

"This is a fabulous competition for all young people to come together and take part in a high profile competition. Cumbria Sport work hard to develop sporting activities available to the young people of this County and continue to achieve high standards. This is a fun way for youngsters to take part in the sport that they love. I am sure this year's final will be just as successful as they have been in the past."

Richard Johnston, sports and recreation officer for Cumbria Sport and games manager said:

"I would encourage as many people as possible to join us on Saturday for what will be a wonderful sporting occasion for all the family. Parents and friends of those taking part are more than welcome to come along and watch or take part in the many other events being provided on the day. I am sure it will be a great success."

Each local authority will be trying to clinch the Lonsdale Trophy, which was awarded for the first time last year, and is currently held by Allerdale. The local authority with the most winning teams from all of the events on the day will receive the trophy, which was kindly donated by the Cumbria Playing Fields Association.
