Today, Cumbria County Council’s local committee for Carlisle ratified over £17,500 for community groups in the area.
The grants, given by neighbourhood forums across Carlisle, are to support local community activities and projects.
County councillor John Collier, chairman of the local committee, said:
"I am pleased to support community groups and projects in Carlisle. The grants provided by neighbourhood forums give people the chance to participate in community activities of all kinds. This promotes social inclusion for people in all communities. Some of the type of projects funded by the community grants programme have included social care projects, setting up of play groups and various youth projects."
The grants approved today are;
1. Play Raffles - £1700 towards the upgrade of the building. Once open, the club will benefit all young people in the area aged 12 - 18 and will be open two nights per week
2. Belah Youth Project - £4,200 towards youth worker wages. Belah Community Centre has recently set up a youth drop in centre. Three youth workers have been employed and the club is open two nights per week
3. Morton Community Centre - £3,000 towards the development of a new youth project at the centre.
4. Harraby Community Centre - £6,000 to continue to good work of the youth club for another year. This money will go towards youth worker salaries for the project.
5. Wigton Road Methodist Church - £2,684 towards a portable audio loop system to be used in the building and halls to improve the use for everyone
