Cumbria County Council's education service is celebrating this week after the quality of study support provision in the county receives national recognition.
James Rennie School, Frizington Community School, St Patrick’s RC School
in Cleator Moor, Thomlinson Junior School and the Living Well Trust will be presented with the Quality in Study Support award at a special school assembly on Wednesday, 9h March 2005 at 1.30pm, at James Rennie School in Carlisle.
Study Support is free out of hours learning which takes place after school as a voluntary activity by pupils. Cumbrian schools are increasingly providing clubs before and after school for the enjoyment of pupils and to enrich and extend their learning. Last year fifty schools across the county received extra funding from The Big Lottery and were able to provide more than 6000 free places.
County councillor Joan Stocker, cabinet member for education said:
"Study support can bring real benefits in terms of improving attainment, behaviour and attendance for those who participate. I am delighted that the high level of provision currently available in this county has been recognised."
Maggie Robinson, study support officer for Cumbria said:
"I am really pleased that these schools have received national recognition for the quality of their study support provision. It is a real credit to the pupils, staff, parents and schools, and to The Living Well Trust, who have all worked very hard and thoroughly deserve these awards."
Corinna Cartwright, deputy headteacher at James Rennie School is looking forward to the awards ceremony. She said:
"The quality and study support procedures have really improved the extra curricula activities at James Rennie School. It has put children at the heart of learning because they have been able to make decisions about what to do through the school council."
