9/3/2005 - Cumbria in top 10 authorities for school admissions

Cumbria County Council is celebrating this week after appearing in a national newspaper's top ten authorities for allocating first choice secondary school places.

The survey, published in The Times this week, confirmed that 96.8% of Cumbrian parents had received a place at their preferred secondary school under the new co-ordinated admissions system introduced this year. These offers were all made on 1st March, the date the Government has set as national offers day.

County councillor Joan Stocker, cabinet member for education said:

"I am delighted that the county council has been able to offer the vast majority of parents their preferred choice of secondary school. It's been a fantastic effort by our school places team to get the offers out on time. This is the first year of important changes to school admissions and I am pleased that Cumbria County Council has proved to be among the best authorities across the country for giving parents their first choice of school."
