Following the declaration today of the 84 seats contested in the election held yesterday for Cumbria County Council the overall results were as follows:
Labour 39 seats
Conservative 32 seats
Liberal Democrat 11 seats
Independent 2 seats
Labour ended the day with an overall gain of one seat after taking "Old Barrow" from an Independent candidate as well as "Wigton" and "Newbarns" from the Conservatives, but they lost "Kendal Highgate" and "Harrington, Clifton and Stainburn" to the Liberal Democrats, but losing "Seaton" to an Independent.
Conservatives ended up down one seat after gaining the South Lakeland divisions of "Lakes" and "Cartmel" from the Liberal Democrats and "Solway Coast" from Labour,
but they lost "Low Furness" and "Keswick and Derwent" to the Liberal Democrats and as well as losing "Wigton" and "Newbarns" to Labour.
The Liberal Democrats gained "Kendal Highgate" and the division of "Harrington, Clifton and Stainburn" from Labour and took "Keswick and Derwent" seat and "Low Furness" from the Conservatives. But they finished with the same number of seats, eleven, after losing, "Lakes" and "Cartmel" to the Conservatives, and "St Michael's" and "Morton" in Carlisle to Labour.
The number of Independent councillor remained at two after Penrith West was held by the sitting member and another independent won "Seaton" from Labour to make up for the loss of "Old Barrow" to a Labour candidate.

From an electorate of 379,729 the total number of votes cast in this year's election was 234,326 a turnout of 61.7%.
The result of the 2001 election was as follows:
Labour 40 seats
Conservative 33 seats
Liberal Democrat 10 seats
Independent 1 seat
The total number of votes cast in 2001 was 228,111 an average turnout of 62%.
