An exhibition on the life and work of Alfred Wainwright opens at Kendal Library on 7th November as part of this year’s Kendal Mountain Book Festival.
"The Alfred Wainwright Legacy" exhibition features archive material and memorabilia from collections at Kendal Museum, Blackburn Library and Cumbria County Council's Library and Archives Services.
On Sunday 13th November there will be a "Wainwright Day" at Kendal Library (during opening hours between 12.00 and 16.00) and a panel discussion at 17.00 led by writer, broadcaster and Chair of the Wainwright Society, Eric Robson. The discussion will be a ticketed event costing £5.
Book Festival Director Julie Tait says:
"We have formed an excellent partnership with Kendal Library since the first book festival took place in 2004. The Alfred Wainwright Legacy is a major aspect of this year’s Festival and one which upholds our commitment to explore the richness of Cumbria’s contribution to mountain writing".
Other events at Kendal Library include a readers’ group workshop on Monday 14th November at 7pm.
Thursday 17th November sees author Matthew Entwistle in conversation with Terry Gifford about his book Millican Dalton: a search for romance and freedom a fascinating tale about the self styled "professor of adventure" who lived in a cave in Borrowdale. Tickets cost £3
Local climber and author Bill Birkett will be reading from his two new books in the "Day in the Life of" series (Glencoe and Borrowdale) at 7pm on Friday 18th November. Tickets cost £5.
County Councillor Roger Bingham, Portfolio Holder for Culture, said:
"We are delighted to be taking part in this year’s festival, and always look forward to welcoming new visitors to Cumbria and Cumbria's Library. Kendal Library houses the Cumbria Libraries Mountaineering Collection, which will be of considerable interest to visitors to the Festivals."
