3/11/2005 - National Meals on Wheels Week

Many people across Cumbria can look forward to eating the "Best of British" next week as Cumbria County Council celebrates National Meals on Wheels Week.

The County Council is working with community based volunteers, WRVS (Womens Royal Voluntary Service) volunteers, Cumbria Care, bakeries, hotels and businesses throughout County to celebrate this years event and continue to provide a vital service to the community.

This year, national Meals on Wheels week will run from 7 - 13 November. Organised by the National Association of Care Caterers (NACC), the aim of the week is to draw attention to the importance of this service which enables people to remain in their own homes when they would otherwise have been hospitalised or taken into residential care.

This year the theme for National Meals on Wheels Week is a "Best of British" menu. In Cumbria this has evolved into a "Best of Cumbrian" theme. Events will be held in Cumbria County Council’s Meals on Wheels kitchens across the county where the menu will be Cumberland sausage and gravy, mashed potatoes with spring onions, swede and peas followed by ginger sponge and custard. Staff and volunteers at the kitchens will be dressing up to celebrate the events, which will take place on;

Kendal, Whinfell Centre, Monday 7th November, 10.45am

Carlisle, Edward Street Kitchen, Wednesday 9th November, 10.45am

Barrow, Moorfield Street Kitchen, Thursday 10th November, 10.45am

Workington, Woodlands, Friday 11th November, 10.30am

County councillor Oliver Pearson, cabinet spokesman for Adult Services says:

"Everyone will be enjoying these fun days, enjoying some excellent Cumbria food and raising awareness about Meals on Wheels. The Meals on Wheels service provides invaluable support to many vulnerable people in the community and all the staff and volunteers do a magnificent job. We are always looking for more volunteers and would welcome any new faces along to one of these events."
