4/11/2005 - Hardwicke Circus switch-on approaches

Cumbria County Council is hoping to spend this Sunday paving the way for the switch-on of part-time traffic signals at Hardwicke Circus in Carlisle.

The county council’s local committee for Carlisle decided in October to introduce part-time signals to control traffic at the busiest times of day on the roundabout. The move follows six months of monitoring traffic flows at the Circus with no signals in operation.

The new signals will operate seven days a week between 7.30 and 9.30am and 3.30 and 6.00pm.

To prepare for the switch-on, council highways staff are planning to spend Sunday, 6th November, putting down markings on the road surface and installing signs beside the carriageway.

The road marking work is, however, heavily dependent on the weather and if conditions are too wet the work cannot be done.

Sunday has been chosen as the best day to prepare for the switch-on in an effort to minimize the disruption caused by the road marking work.

If the weather is too bad on Sunday the work is expected to be put back for a week.

If, however, the weather is good enough this weekend, the new signals should be up-and-running for rush hour on Monday morning, 7th November.
