Cumbria County Council’s Library Service is inviting you along to Workington Library between 14.00 and 15.00 on Sunday 6th November to "larn thisel Cummerlan!"
The library is hosting Workington Writer in Residence John Murray for a Cumbrian dialect session.
Learners are very welcome. You don't have to know any Cumbrian dialect to enjoy the session, but you'll certainly know a lot more about it by the end of the afternoon. There will also be a fun quiz about unusual dialect words with a prize for the winner
You can read some really funny "Cummerlan tyals" John has dug out of the library archives including "The Flimby Preest's Britches" by Gweordie Greenup written in 1895.
John Murray was born in Flimby in 1950, and educated at Workington Grammar School. John has published eight novels and was long listed for the Booker Prize in 2003. Many of his comic novels are full of West Cumbrian dialect.
John will be joined by some of Allerdale's excellent comic dialect poets. Ethel Fisher MBE of Seaton (A Rowlin Tiall) and Ian Cooper of Workington (Hess thoo ivver seen a cuddy lowp a yeat?)
County Councillor Roger Bingham, spokesman for the Library Service says:
"We are delighted to be welcoming John Murray to host this session. Why not come along and enjoy a light-hearted exploration of Cumbrian dialect heritage? It promises to be a fun and eye-opening afternoon and I’m sure John will have everyone fluent no time."
Places are limited so please book in advance. Bookings can be made at the counter in Workington Library or by calling 01900 325170.
