21/11/2005 - Extra care needed as winter bares its teeth

Cumbria County Council is warning people across the county to take extra care during the current cold snap.

Over the past few days the county has seen hard frosts overnight and black ice forming on roads and pavements - the county council has recorded road surface temperatures as low as minus seven degrees centigrade.

Roads have typically been freezing at around 4pm and remaining below zero until 10 or 11am - at Garsdale, the roadsurface froze at 2pm on November 17th and did not rise above freezing until 11am on the 21st.

County council crews have been out gritting priority routes before the afternoon freeze and working throughout the night.

The cold weather looks set continue, making conditions on roads and underfoot particularly treacherous in the coming week.

Forecasts from the Meterological Office suggest that the county will come in for a spell of frost, freezing fog, rain, sleet, snow and strong winds.

The predictions are for rain falling on freezing road surfaces in the middle of the week, followed by a drop in temperatures for Thursday and Friday accompanied by gale force winds and possibly snow.

Drivers and pedestrians should allow extra time for their journeys and take extra care. Following a few simple rules can help.

Cumbria County Council's Winter Driving leaflet contains tips for safe driving in winter conditions and shows which priority routes are gritted.

All households in the coubnty have received a copy of the leaflet in the last few weeks and some of the driving advice is included here in the Notes for Editors section. The leaflet can also be seen at: www.cumbria.gov.uk/elibrary/Content/Internet/544/913/37974111520.pdf
