22/11/2005 - Glowing report for Millom care home

The staff at Lapstone House in Millom are celebrating after standards at the residential care home were highly praised following a recent inspection.

The Commission for Social Care Inspection (CSCI) carried out an unannounced at Lapstone House on 27th October 2005. In the inspection report released last week the home achieved 14 level 4 grades out of a total of 26 standards assessed.

A level 4 is awarded when the national standard is exceeded and is a rare achievement.

Lapstone House achieved level 4 under headings that assessed the home’s planning of individuals care; treating residents with dignity and respect; helping residents maintain contact with family and the community; encouraging choice and control for residents over their own lives; having well-trained staff in sufficient numbers; and the overall management of Lapstone House.

The report says:

“The home provides a comfortable and relaxing place to live and for friends and relatives to visit. People in the home receive attentive support and their health and personal needs are met. The registered manager and staff are very well informed of people’s individual needs and have positive relationships with them. The atmosphere in the home is relaxing and people value the attention and care they receive. People have a clear voice in the way the home is managed and their views and opinions are regularly sought.”

Lapstone House is run by Cumbria Care, Cumbria County Council’s in –house care provider with 25 places registered at the home.

County councillor Oliver Pearson, cabinet spokesman for Adult Social Care, says:

“Everyone at Cumbria County Council is completely committed to providing the very best care for older people in the county. We are all very proud of the hard work our staff put in to achieve this aim and we are delighted with the results of the recent inspection at Lapstone House.”

Cate Bowman, Head of Cumbria Care comments:

“This is the third of Cumbria Care’s homes to be awarded level 4s in the past year and is a clear demonstration of Cumbria Care’s commitment to continuous improvement. I would like to take this chance to congratulate Lapstone House Manager Christine Pidduck.”
