Cumbria County Council cabinet today approved grants of more than £880,000 for land reclamation projects at Dalton-in-Furness, South Walney and Nenthead.
Members approved plans to spend:
£335,500 extending the Dalton to Roose Greenway in Furness. The money will be spent extending the nature reserve, building a new bridge to improve pedestrian safety and linking the Cumbria Way to the Furness Peninsula.
£230,000 creating a public space on land at Wright’s Garage, Nenthead
£298,350 reclaiming 28 hectares of land at South Walney to improve the nature reserve with new access road, car park and hard and soft landscaping.
Cumbria County Council runs the land reclamation programme on behalf of the North West Development Agency. The current programme to bring derelict, underused or neglected land in the county back into use is worth £21 million.
Tim Heslop, cabinet spokesman for economic well-being and regeneration, said: “The land reclamation money we are spending is making a real difference in the county. These three projects are among the many which are bringing underused and derelict land back into use for communities.”
