County councillor Philip Chappelhow, cabinet spokesman for children's services said:
“I am delighted that so many schools in this area are to be presented with this award. This recognises the commitment of not only the schools involved but of Cumbria Healthy School Team itself. The health needs of young people are very important and to be able not only to develop a wide range of health initiatives and receive so many awards is a major achievement.”
Cumbria County Council works in partnership with the Primary Care Trusts in North Cumbria and Morecambe Bay in developing health initiatives in schools. Guests attending the ceremony include Dr Jean Vickers, Lead Director of Public Health for North Cumbria PCT, Dr Leigh Griffin, Chief Executive Morecambe Bay PCT and Councillor Phillip Chappelhow.
The Cumbria Healthy Schools Team is supporting over 200 schools in the county to develop health related activities including personal, social and health education, sex and relationships, drugs education and emotional health and well-being. Many schools have also looked at food and balanced eating, citizenship, safer routes to school, physical activity and school councils.
