Today, Cumbria County Council's local committee for Carlisle decided to introduce part-time traffic lights at Hardwicke Circus for a trial period of six months.
The signals have been switched off for the last six months in an experiment to see if traffic flowed better. The conclusions from the trial so far are that traffic flows better during off peak hours but not during peak hours.
County councillor, Reg Watson, chairman of the local committee's highways working group said:
"Members of the public have made it quite clear that they would like to see us try part time signals at Hardwicke Circus. The local committee today agreed to an experiment of part time signals for six months. Signals will operate during peak times only just to see if it eases some of the delays and difficulties motorists are experiencing during morning and afternoon rush hours."
Work will start for part time signals to be in place in approximately a months time. Signals will operate from 7.30am until 9.30am and 3.30pm until 6pm. The trial will be monitored and an evaluation will be brought back to the local committee after six months for a final decision.
