10/10/2005 - Pedestrian safety priority for local committee

Today, Cumbria County Council's local committee for Carlisle agreed to make alterations to the current road layout and signaling on Lowther Street in a bid to improve pedestrian safety.

A series of proposals were agreed today, including:

1. Reducing the number of crossings on Lowther Street

2. Making the crossings more accessible to all users

3. Changing the locations of the crossings to better accommodate school children and shoppers

County councillor Cyril Weber, chairman of the local committee said:

"These changes will improve pedestrian safety along Lowther Street. There has been a number of accidents on this busy road over the last couple of years. We do not want this to continue and these alterations will make sure pedestrians are safe when crossing this road."

Some work will start over the next couple of months, however surfacing work will not be able to be carried out until United Utilities programmed work is completed early next year. Total cost for the alterations is approximately £65k.
