12/10/2005 - Neighbourhood forum takes action for its residents

At this week's neighbourhood forum for the Penrith Urban area, residents raised concerns about pedestrian safety with more and more cyclists using pavements instead of roads around the area.

From this, Cumbria County Council intends to work alongside the Police to make sure action is taken so pedestrians can walk along pavements safely. PC Ian Walton was at the meeting and assured residents that he would speak to the new police community support officer and target specific areas to stop cyclists using pavements.

County councillor Colin Nineham chairman of the forum said:

"The issue of pedestrian safety was raised at our last neighbourhood forum meeting from a number of residents. Cyclists using the pavements can in fact get a fixed penalty notice. They are there for pedestrians only. The county council has listened to these residents and we have assured them that we will be working with the Police to take action and stop cyclists using pavements so pedestrians can use them safely."

Neighbourhood forums provide residents with an opportunity to raise any issue or concern they may have about their area. Anyone wanting more information about the forum should contact Eden Area Support office in Alston, 01434 382128 or Penrith, 01768 242368.
