19/10/2005 - Road signs with a difference

Shock boards will be erected around the county on stretches of roads that have a high accident record to remind motorists to drive with care.

Shock boards are special signs that display the number of casualties that have occurred on a particular road over a five year period in an effort to prevent further accidents happening.

The Safer Roads for Cumbria partnership are spending £36,000 for 17 signs to be placed on the A590 Kendal to Barrow, A591 Kendal to Keswick and the A595 Dalton in Furness to Carlisle.

Signs will be positioned at strategic places on each route to warn motorists that they are driving on a potentially dangerous road.   In keeping with drivers safety, the poles are made of fibreglass which if hit will break in a controlled manner, absorbing energy on impact.   The idea of this is that they will significantly reduce the severity of injury to motorists if they crash into them.   The posts are maintenance free and will last for more than 60 years.

County councillor Geoff Hodgson, spokesman for community safety said:

“This is just one of the many initiatives that the Safer Roads for Cumbria partnership have implemented to try and reduce the number of people that are killed and seriously injured on the county’s roads every day.   We hope that drivers will take notice of the alarmingly high number of people that have become casualties on these chosen routes and drive with more care”
