24/10/2005 - Cumbrian youngsters get 'On the Move'

Cumbria County Council’s outdoor education service, 'Cumbria Outdoors' has successfully attracted another £400k of Big Lottery money for a major youth project involving over 1000 young people in Cumbria.

On Thursday, youngsters from Carlisle, Allerdale and Copeland will take part in their first multi-agency residential at the county council's outdoor education centre - Hawse End to celebrate the first year of the 'On the Move' project. They will be joined by representatives from the three local authorities, various funding bodies and activity providers to celebrate their own achievements since joining the project.

The 'On the Move' project has been running for the last 12 months and aims to get more young people aged 12 - 16 to take part in more sport and outdoor activities, particularly those who have previously found this difficult.

County councillor Philip Chappelhow, cabinet spokesman for children's services said:

"The county council understands the importance of providing outdoor educational opportunities to the young people of this county. The 'On the Move' project is a wonderful project to not only get young people to develop their physical skills but help them also improve their social skills. Youngsters benefit significantly from projects like these and this is just another example of the excellent service Cumbria Outdoors provides which is such an important part of the county's educational landscape."

Deborah Hunter, Project Co-ordinator, said:

"The residential provides an excellent setting for the young people to celebrate their success, not only have they earned this residential through being more ‘active’ they have also qualified to be part of the project next year".

Each young person that has been involved in the project has benefited from having a free travel pass which has enabled them to travel to a range of free or subsidised sporting and outdoor activities throughout the county.
