26/10/2005 - Drawing in of the days spells danger for drivers

The number of people killed and seriously injured on Cumbria's roads will rise when the clocks go back this weekend unless drivers take more care.

The clocks going back an hour mean that darker evenings and deteriorating weather conditions are a fatal combination. They spell trouble for everyone using the roads whether they are drivers, riders or pedestrians.

Statistics show that in the winter months between 7.00am and 9.00am drivers in Cumbria are 33% more likely to have an accident until they get used to the change in conditions.

County councillor Geoff Hodgson, spokesman for community safety said:

"As the nights become darker earlier than we are used to, motorists need to watch their speed and be aware that they are less likely to see vulnerable road users such as cyclists, pedestrians and motorcyclists".

"We are urging all road users to make sure that they are visible by checking their lights are working if driving and wearing bright or reflective clothing if walking or cycling. The message is simple, be safe and be seen".
