27/10/2005 - Spotlight on Fireworks

Local people are being reminded that new regulations now mean the times businesses can sell fireworks are restricted.

Without a special ‘year round’ licence from Cumbria County Council's Trading Standards, fireworks can now only be sold from 15 October to 10 November, 26-31 December; 3 days before and on the day of Chinese New Year; and similarly the three days before and on the day of Diwali. There is also a curfew making it illegal to set off fireworks after 11 pm (midnight on 5 November, 1 am on 1 January).

Phil Ashcroft, Head of Cumbria County council's Trading Standards says:

"Cumbria County Council welcomes the new regulations and will continue to do all it can to make sure that people wanting to enjoy bonfire night are safe.

Clearly restricting the time during which fireworks can be sold is an extremely positive step. This together with an commitment to making sure shops only sell to over 18’s will help reduce the number of needless injuries and devastation that can be caused by fireworks being set off inappropriately and dangerously.

Never be tempted to buy fireworks from street traders or from markets/car boot sales, these people will not be registered to sell and could be selling dangerous fireworks."

Any Cumbrian resident wanting to report concerns they have about a businesses selling fireworks inappropriately should contact their local Trading Standards Office.
