This year the 21st October marks the 200th anniversary of the Battle of Trafalgar and Cumbria County Council’s Denton Holme Library has organised a series of events to mark the day.
Denton Holme has a fascinating history (street names in the area include Trafalgar Street and Nelson Street named in honour of events 200 years ago) and the library has worked with local historian Denis Perriam to produce guided walks taking in places of historical interest. The guide sheets have been available in the library and local shops and businesses for the last few weeks. The guide sheet also includes space for comments and additions and a quiz question. Sheets should be handed into the library to give entrants the chance to win a book token.
An exhibition of photos charting Denton Holme’s history and development over the years will be on display next week (24th - 30th October).
A children’s activity day will also be held on Monday 24th October at Denton Holme Library between 2.00 - 3.30 pm. The day will include games like battleships and story sessions about ships, pirates and the high seas. Places on the activity day must be pre booked by ringing Denton Holme Library on 01228 607340.
County councillor Roger Bingham, spokesman for the library service says:
"As a keen local historian I know what an excellent place Cumbria’s library’s are for researching this history of your local area. Denton Holme has a fascinating background and these walks should help more people get out and about and appreciate it. The activity day next Monday is an excellent way of getting down to your local library and finding out what is on offer for you and your child, I would encourage parents to book a place and join in."
