5/10/2005 - Story Sacks morning in Carlisle Library

As part of the Family Learning Week programme Carlisle Library will be holding a Story Sack morning, include a story time session, on Monday 10th October between 10.30 and 11.30.

Story Sacks have proved to be a very popular way of introducing children to reading. The brightly coloured drawstring sacks are based on storybooks but also include related games and toys as well as at least one other book offering interesting facts.

Cumbria County Council are holding a programme of events across the county to promote Family Learning Week (8th - 16th October). Family Learning Week is a national campaign that raises awareness of the importance and scope of family learning. It aims to strengthen communities and to create more opportunities for the family to learn together.

The Campaign for Learning launched the first national Family Learning Day in 1998. This became Family Learning Weekend in 1999 and Family Learning Week for 2004.

Councillor Roger Bingham, county council spokesman for the library service, said:

"Story Sacks have proved very popular with children across Cumbria. They have proved to be a great way to promote learning. It's very good to see more youngsters getting the chance to enjoy reading and I would encourage parents to bring their children along on to Carlisle Library."
