5/10/2005 - Cumbrian kids invited to build a robot

Cumbrian kids are being encouraged to bring their parents along to help them build a Robot at one of the Robotics Workshops being held in Cumbria County Council’s Libraries.

The county council’s library and adult education services are providing the workshops as part of their Family Learning Week programme.

The sessions will run on Sunday 9th October between 13.00 and 15.00 at Carlisle, Penrith, Whitehaven, Workington, Kendal and Barrow Libraries. There will be further sessions at Longtown Library on Monday 10th between 17.00 and 18.15 and Harraby Library on Thursday 13th between 17.30 and 18.45.

Aimed at parents and children aged 7+, the participants will get the opportunity to build their own robot from scratch! Pre-booking is strongly advised as these sessions are very popular and places are limited. Bookings can be made prior to the day at the libraries above.

Family Learning Week is a national campaign that raises awareness of the importance and scope of family learning. It aims to strengthen communities and to create more opportunities for the family to learn together.

The Campaign for Learning launched the first national Family Learning Day in 1998. This became Family Learning Weekend in 1999 and Family Learning Week for 2004.

Philip Chapelhow, Cumbria County Council spokesman for Children’s Services and Lifelong Learning says:

"Family Learning Week is a great opportunity for families to try new activities and learn together. The events are about encouraging parents to enhance their children’s learning.

Schools, the library and adult education services, and the many organizations involved in the County Council’s Family Learning Week events all provide some wonderful opportunities for parents to get actively involved in their child’s learning.

I would encourage everyone to take advantage of the events that are being held across the county."
