13/9/2005 - Local committee continues to reduce traffic speed to improve safety

Today, Cumbria County Council's local committee for Eden agreed to introduce new speed limits for the A686 and adjoining roads in a bid to reduce the speed of traffic and improve road safety.

The speed limits will be as follows:

1. 50mph on the A686 between Carleton and Langwathby

2. 30mph in Edenhall and an extension of the 30mph speed limit westwards from Langwathby, to the bridge

3. 50mph extended east and southwards, from the A686 along the unclassified roads to the 30mph limit in Edenhall. This will also include the unclassified road to Udford

County councillor Gary Strong, chairman of the local committee said:

"This committee has encouraged the implementation of speed limits throughout many villages across the area to improve public safety. The simple fact is that driving just a few miles per hour over the speed limit increases the risks of injury if you crash and this committee will continue to do all it can to slow down speeding drivers to improve the safety of people living in this area."

The speed limits will come into force by the end of this financial year.
