Cycling fans could see facilities and routes greatly improved as Cumbria County Council agrees to work with various organisations to improve and develop cycle tourism in the County.
The county council's cabinet this week discussed the findings from a recent consultation exercise on its Cycle Tourism Strategy and how to take it forward and develop cycling tourism in Cumbria. Members supported the need for the development of new routes and facilities in order to make Cumbria the premier destination for leisure cycling.
County councillor Tim Heslop, cabinet spokesman for economic well-being and regeneration said:
"After consultation was carried out on the draft cycle tourism strategy many key issues were identified on how cycling opportunities could be improved in the county. Rather than trying to amend the strategy to reflect the comments made, a new cycle tourism prospectus has been produced. This includes opportunities for increasing mountain biking facilities and family cycling on traffic free trails.
"Tourism in Cumbria is a huge industry. Cumbria County Council is committed to making Cumbria the best destination for cycling which will also generate major economic and environmental benefits for the whole county."
