26/9/2005 - Making the News

Budding young journalists will benefit from an exciting new online news project to be launched this week.

The project 'Making the News' is being launched by CLEO (Cumbria and Lancashire Education Online) on Wednesday 28th September at the Lakeside Hotel in Windermere at 9.30am. Pupils acting as ambassadors from five South Lakeland secondary schools will be at The Lakeside Hotel researching and writing news stories that are relevant to the day, time and place.

The Making the News technology will enable their stories to be approved and published within minutes of their completion and shared via the internet. The aim of the launch day is to have a selection of high quality articles and interviews online by the end of the day to act as exemplar and inspirational material.

Making the News will enable schools to:

1. Publish pupils’ writing virtually immediately making full use of multi-media

2. Publish articles relevant across the entire curriculum and all key stages

3. Provide a living environment for creativity, making classwork and homework visible, shared and relevant

4. Publish all school news quickly

5. Improve pupils’ transition between schools

6. Explore and extend home-school links

7. Set up peer to peer communication between schools

8. Link to Making the News directly from their school website, keeping it relevant

9. Develop and share positive publicity

10 Encourage independent learning and provide a showcase for gifted and talented pupils

11. Set pupils writing for a real and meaningful purpose

County councillor Philip Chappelhow, cabinet spokesman for children's services said:

"This is a wonderful new project which is another example of the CLEO partnership providing exciting and relevant content on our IT infrastructure to give everyone the opportunity to improve their education and skills levels. I am sure that the pupils involved will have a great time taking part."
