Young people will be taught the valuable skills needed to pass a driving test and become a responsible road user in an effort to make new drivers safe on the roads.
Young Cumbria are running a pre-learner driver training programme where anyone aged between 15 and 17 are welcome to attend free of charge to brush up on their pre-driving skills. The course will start on Monday 3rd October at Grange-over-Sands Community Resource Centre from 6.30pm - 8.30pm.
Between August 2004 and July this year, at least one driver between the ages of 16 and 25 were involved in 22 fatal collisions (48 per cent of all those recorded) and 101 serious injury accidents (33 per cent of all serious injury collisions).
First Gear is a project aimed at young people who want to find out more about responsible road use prior to taking driving lessons or their test. The programme is a 10 week programme with a 2 hour session every Monday evening covering attitudes to driving, the basics of vehicle care and the opportunity to develop basic manoeuvering skills in a vehicle.
Lyn Williams, project organiser from Young Cumbria said:
"Too many young people are being involved in road accidents on Cumbria's roads. Young Cumbria has set up workshops and courses to encourage youngsters to come along and improve their driving skills. The First Gear course will provide new drivers with all they need to know about becoming a driver, from the cost of driving to taking the test to becoming safe and responsible on the roads."
