5/9/2005 - Minister for Schools congratulates Cumbria on outstanding Key Stage 2 results

Jacqui Smith, Minister of State for Schools and 14 - 19 Learners, has congratulated Cumbria on the excellent performance in this year's Key Stage 2 results.

Cumbria County Council received a letter from the MP this week congratulating pupils, teachers and the county council's education service for this year's achievement.

County councillor Philip Chappelhow, cabinet spokesman for children's services said:

"It's wonderful that the achievements of pupils in this area has been recognised nationally.   Young people in Cumbria are amongst some of the most improved this year which is extremely encouraging and over the last two years our schools have been improving considerably faster than the national average.   We are performing better and improving faster.   This is a time for celebrating the success of individual pupils and the support given by teachers and parents.   Together, they have worked very hard to raise the standards throughout our schools.   Congratulations to all involved."
