Cumbria County Council’s Fire and Rescue Service are talking rubbish and encouraging people in Workington’s Moss Bay to start their spring clean early on Thursday 26th January.
As part of the ongoing Action Ward Initiative in Moss Bay the Fire and Rescue Service are holding a skip drive and rubbish amnesty.
One of the key objectives of the action wards is to drive down the number of rubbish fires. Many rubbish fires are deliberately started using large or bulky items that have been discarded on the street. Normally residents would have to pay for a special collection for items such as chairs, sofas and mattresses or arrange to get them to a refuse site.
Working with Derwent and Solway Housing Association and the County Council’s Neighbourhood Support Team the Fire and Rescue Service have arranged for two skips and a refuse vehicle to be on site in Moss Bay to dispose of bulky items free of charge.
There will be skips located in the car park opposite the Westfield Pub on Firth View Walk and in the car park next to 75 Cusack Crescent. Both these sites will open between 09.30 and 14.30. A refuse vehicle will be on site at the garage opposite St Mary’s church on Salisbury Street. This will open between 11.00 and 14.00.
Staff and vans from the Neigbourhood Support Team will be on hand to help people transport items where necessary.
County councillor Geoff Hodgson, spokesman for the Fire and Rescue Service says:
“Rubbish fires are a major cause of concern and the Fire and Rescue Service is always looking for new and innovative ways to prevent and reduce incidents. We are committed to creating stronger, safer and cleaner communities. This rubbish amnesty has come about from a request from the residents and we are always keen to hear their views on how incidents could be reduced.”
