27/6/2006 - Photo opportunity: Silver jubilee celebrations for Penrith day centre

A Penrith day centre which provides support for 56 adults with learning difficulties is celebrating its 25th birthday this week.

A host of fun-packed events are planned on Saturday 1 July to mark the Edington Centre’s silver jubilee year including face painting, a magician and special performances by the Centre’s own 'Dragonfly' drama group.

Photographers are invited to attend the festivities at the Centre on Gilwilly Road which get underway at 12:00noon with the unveiling of a special commemorative plaque by Simon Edington - the grandson of Dr. Edington who is the building’s namesake and first GP to open a practice in Penrith.

A special birthday cake, complete with candles, has also been laid on to the help service users and staff mark the special anniversary for the Cumbria County Council run day centre which first opened its doors in 1981.

County councillor Oliver Pearson, Cabinet Member responsible for Adult Social Care, said: "The Edington Centre and its staff have provided invaluable help and support to countless numbers of people over the last twenty five years. I am sure everyone in Penrith will join with me in wishing everyone involved the happiest of birthdays in this, their silver jubilee year."

Cumbria County Council is responsible for more than 30 day centres, providing care and support to adults with learning difficulties and physical disabilities.
