21/3/2006 - Allotment sale sows the seeds for future generations

The sale of allotments in Great Broughton at a knock-down price has been approved by a meeting of Cumbria County Council's Cabinet today.

It was agreed to sell two areas of allotments known as the West End or Coldgill Avenue allotments and the Nook or Back Lane allotments, to Great Broughton Parish Council. Cabinet approved a 30% discount on the allotments' capital value under the council's Well-Being Policy, which is aimed at promoting local prosperity and boosting local communities.

A recent open market valuation of the two allotments estimated their worth at £40,000 - Cabinet agreed to a sale price of £28,000, which is the maximum percentage discount possible, as recommended at a previous meeting of the Local Committee for Allerdale.

"Part of the allotments will be used for the long-term by the scouts and guides, so we really are helping a local community sow the seeds for the future. Sometimes it's better for local assets to be managed locally and in this case, we're confident the parish council will do a great job of taking on the ownership of the allotments," said Councillor Liz Mallinson, cabinet member responsible for property.
