24/3/2006 - Three beers for rural pub scheme

Cumbria County Council has teamed up with the rural enterprise scheme Pub is the Hub to launch a countywide initiative to encourage rural pubs and licensees to provide access to local services.

The official launch of the new scheme will take place next Tuesday March 28th at 2pm at the Horse and Farrier in Dacre, West of Penrith. Print and broadcast media are invited to the launch, which will be attended by Cumbria County Council’s Leader Tim Stoddard and Chair John Collier as well as Pub is the Hub’s Campaign Director John Longden and leading figures from the pub industry and Post Office.

Pub is the Hub has completed over 200 projects over the last three years where pubs have been helped to diversify so they remain a viable and vital part of their rural communities. Post offices, grocery counters, pharmacy collection points, dry cleaners, delicatessens and internet cafes are some of the examples of businesses that have been introduced into pubs across Britain to help them remain at the hub of their community.

Previously schemes have been rolled out on a pub-by-pub basis and the new partnership with Cumbria County Council is the first time a strategic approach has been taken across the county.

Journalists attending the launch will have the opportunity to interview representatives from Cumbria County Council and Pub is the Hub to learn more about how the scheme will be rolled out across the county.
