24/5/2006 - Kendal buses back onto Stricklandgate

Buses will return to Stricklandgate in Kendal town centre on Tuesday, May 30th, following the completion of enhancement work on the pedestrian priority scheme.

New bus shelters have been installed along Stricklandgate as part of the improvements and buses will be running again from stops at the town hall and Westmorland Shopping Centre.

Services have been using the bus station since 8th March while work was carried out on Stricklandgate to widen pavements and put in raised kerbs at bus stops to help passengers board buses.

New town centre services, subsidised by Cumbria County Council and designed after extensive consultation with local people, have been running since April 3rd.

It is hoped that the return of buses to Stricklandgate will further improve the already impressive performance of the new services.

Figures for the first month of the new timetable show that numbers of fare paying passengers are ten per cent up on the same period last year and that there has been a 26pc increase in journeys by Concessionary NoWCard holders following the introduction free transport at the beginning of April.

Town centre service timetables remain largely unchanged. However, once services have been re-introduced on Stricklandgate, they will be reviewed to see if any minor changes are required to further improve services.

Comments on the timetable and suggestions how they could be improved would be welcomed. Contact details can be found on the back of the timetable leaflets, available from all normal outlets in the town.
