27/11/2006 - Festive fun at Eden libraries

Libraries in Eden are dusting off their sleigh-bells and ringing in a feast of festive fun over Christmas and the New Year.

Cumbria County Council’s Library Service is hosting a sparkling list of events to mark the yuletide season.

From Friday 1 December, the first child to visit Penrith library each day will be asked to open a door on the library’s advent calendar. Each lucky youngster will receive a small gift.n the same day, younger visitors to libraries in Alston, Appleby, Kirkby Stephen, Shap and Penrith will get the chance to take part in a special Christmas colouring competition which is being held throughout December.

Saturday 2 December sees local author Bridget Trafford dropping in to Kirkby Stephen Library to launch her first children’s novel ‘The Rats Tail’. The book, which takes readers on a magical journey, has been illustrated by Bridget’s 15-year old daughter Alex who will join her mother at 10:30am to launch the library’s colouring competition.

Alston Library is giving children the chance to take home an early Christmas present on Tuesday 5 December. The library is hosting a robotic workshop between 6:00pm and 8:00pm and youngsters who attend will get to take home a free dancing robot. Places are limited and parents advised to book early at Alston Library to avoid disappointment.

On Sunday 10 December, children's author Trix Jones will be putting on an afternoon of festive fun for youngsters at Penrith Library based on her book ‘The Ghastlies Christmas’. Tickets for the event, which runs from 2:00pm to 3:30pm, are £1:00 and can be obtained from Penrith Library.  

To round off the festive period, Penrith Library will be seeing in the New Year on Friday 5 January with a special graphic novel workshop for young people aged 13-18. More information is available from the library.
